California Indian Day 2019
It is California Indian Day! Not to be confused with Indigenous People’s Day (that’s next month). I know we are not from India, but that is what we were called, that’s what we called (and sometimes still call) each other, and that is what the day was declared in 1968. I also know we are in Oregon, but my Tribal people and my village land are in the place that was named California.
To honor today and my Karuk people, I want to appreciate mine and Toby’s @tobylinwood daughter Tasia.
1st picture (below): Tasia made rose flash for the 65 Roses cystic fibrosis fundraiser, our artists and shop donated over $4000 to @cff_oregon 🌹
2nd picture (below): Tasia proudly wore her Karuk basket cap again this year for school pictures.
Last year she wore her cap and was made fun of by other kids and an adult made a rude comment. Instead of any number of things she could have done, Tasia asked me to come to her class to do a presentation and educate about who we are as Karuk people and what a basket cap is. I did and Tasia helped me. We talked to all of the kids in her grade at the school.
This year all of those kids, a year older, didn’t give her cap a second glance. They snuggled up to her as they stood in line for their pictures and chatted about books.
At such a young age Tasia is creating artwork to help give back to her community and using her experiences to influence social change within her classroom and school. She motivates us to do the same in our business.
I am honored to be Tasia’s Mother, to be a California Indigenous person, and to own this Tattoo Shop 🙌🏽
