Artist Statement: The Intersection of Black Work, Sacred Geometry, and American Traditional Tattooing

Tattooing, for me, is a continuous exploration of contrasts—between the bold and the delicate, the modern and the traditional, the spiritual and the physical. My work is deeply rooted in the precision and depth of black work tattooing, a style that allows me to create intricate, impactful pieces that feel both timeless and grounded. There’s something captivating about using only black ink to tell a story—about how the starkness of dark lines can communicate both simplicity and complexity. It’s a style that invites contemplation, pulling viewers into a world of geometric perfection, where every shape has its own meaning, and every line serves a purpose.

Birds, in particular, hold a special place in my work. They symbolize freedom, transcendence, and the untamed spirit. When paired with sacred geometry, their flight becomes a metaphor for the balance between the physical world and something much larger. Sacred geometry provides a framework for understanding the universe, with its perfect patterns and infinite possibilities. I love how the fluidity of a bird’s form contrasts with the precision of these mathematical symbols—together, they speak to the harmony between order and chaos, the seen and the unseen.

At the same time, there’s a side of my work that finds joy in the simplicity and boldness of American Traditional tattoos. Their vibrant colors and iconic imagery, remind me of the raw, authentic joy of tattooing—like a good PB&J. There’s something so satisfying in their bold, clean lines and straightforwardness. No frills, just powerful symbols and rich colors that stand the test of time. Whether it’s a classic dagger or a stylized pin-up, there’s an undeniable beauty in American Traditional tattoos. The walk-in nature of this style makes it even more appealing—its accessibility, its immediacy, and its ability to connect on a deeply personal level with anyone who sits in my chair.

To me, tattooing is about finding a balance between these two worlds: the meticulous, introspective nature of black work and the approachable, iconic simplicity of American Traditional. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t always have to be complicated to be meaningful, just as a good PB&J doesn’t need anything extravagant to be perfect. Both styles, in their own ways, offer something profound and deeply satisfying. And as an artist, there’s nothing more fulfilling than creating pieces that resonate, whether they delve deep into the metaphysical or celebrate the straightforward beauty of tradition.

Many thanks,

Ciel La Rue

What clients are saying about Ciel and the tattoo shop:

“Got a tattoo done on walk-in Sunday by Ciel, 10/10 the best tattooing experience I’ve ever had. The atmosphere in the shop and by Ciel was super welcoming and friendly. For the tattoo itself he did an AMAZING job. I came in with a very vague idea of what I wanted and he executed it even better than I could have dreamed of. If you’re in the Portland area and want to get a tattoo you NEED to come here!”

“This is the cutest tattoo shop ever! I showed up last minute for a walk in tattoo and Ciel was more than willing to tattoo me, even after they were technically closed for the day. whenever I am in portland again, I will be going here. the tattoo turned out amazing and I had such a great experience. thank you ciel for welcoming me and my girlfriend into your space and giving us the best treatment!!!”

“Phenomenal experience!
Right off the bat I want to say Ciel who did mine and my partners tattoos was amazing. Me and my girl went in late at night for our first ever tattoos. No one was there but us and him which you might think would be a bit intimidating or off in some way given it was our first tattoo experience and at night in Portland, but you would be sooo wrong. It was very comfortable, Ciel was respectful, understanding and clearly knew his craft very well. I felt at ease from the very beginning and so did my partner. Throughout the 3 and some hour process he was really conversational, super easy to talk too, we felt like we could trust him right away. Super cool dude that I will hopefully be back to see very soon.
The location is very peacful. Lots of light and space which made me feel right at home.
Should you go? Yes, one million percent. I’d recommend Ciel La Rue aka The Green Flash for anyone of my friends or family and I extend that to whoever's reading this. You will not be disappointed.”

“Got my very first tat here with Ciel!! Had such of a great experience- I was super nervous but Ciel was so chill and made me feel comfortable immediately. He is very creative and made multiple original designs for me to choose from off of the idea that I had brought in. He was also very patient with me through the whole process even though I was being quiet indecisive on placement/sizing/etc. Tattoo turned out better than I could have imagined and I was sent off with lots of useful information for the healing process and they shop even followed up on my progress multiple times. Also the atmosphere in the shop is great too and I loved the music - and they even have snacks in the waiting room! Will be back and 10/10 would recommend!”
